CASPER, Wyo. (Wyoming News Now) - On December 13, 2021 the Natrona County School District Board of Trustees held their final meeting of the year. Parents from around the county came to confront the board tonight about books found in school libraries that they believe to be inappropriate. Excerpts from the books were read to the board by the concerned parents.
“The initiative to introduce, and place these books within our schools came to this board. Came to your door, knocked, and you allowed this distressing, fringe agenda through the doors, directly to our children. These things may not come from you, but they come to you,” said Sarah Bieber, a concerned parent.
Multiple parents continued to express their distrust with the board and read more excerpts from books that they considered to be almost pornographic in nature.
The board was able to respond to these complaints though and assure parents that the books would be reviewed by the district to find if they were in fact inappropriate. Board members did reference other books such as Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird to express that a book may not be completely banned due to one passage.
“I think it’s kind of difficult to have someone read a passage from a book and expect that the book be banned based on a single passage,” said Board of Trustees member Debbie McCullar.
Board members did agree though that many of the passages read by parents were inappropriate for some schools.
