The Iowa Valley Community College District (IVCCD) board appointed its leaders for 2022 and handled several business items including the extension of a lease agreement with Marshall County during Wednesday night’s monthly meeting.
Larry Johnson will serve as the president of the board for the upcoming year, while Paul Pohlson was voted in as the next vice president.
After the board reorganized for 2022, they moved into several new business items, but not before Chancellor Kristie Fisher took a moment to address an incident in Iowa Falls early on Wednesday morning that ended when law enforcement officers shot and killed a man believed to be stalking a woman. As a result, the Ellsworth Community College campus went into lockdown, and classes were suspended until 11 a.m.
Fisher commended Ellsworth Provost Martin Reimer and his staff for responding “professionally and quickly” to the situation.
“Thank you to you and your entire team for handling a challenging day,” she said.
At its most recent meeting, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors approved an extended lease with IVCCD for the use of the Orpheum Theatre to conduct court proceedings until May 31, 2022. On Wednesday night, the IVCCD board passed an identical motion by a unanimous vote.
IVCCD Vice Chancellor of Education and Training Jacque Goodman said the new lease stipulates that the county clean five days a week instead of two as previously required, and it also accommodates for swapping some furniture between the two entities. Fisher recalled an initial conversation with Sen. Jeff Edler (R-State Center) in July of 2020 when he predicted the arrangement would only be necessary for three to six months during the renovation and reconstruction of the courthouse, but she said the county has been a great partner throughout the process.
“It’s worked out well, and we’ve been happy to help,” Fisher said.
The board unanimously approved a job training agreement with H.D. Hudson Manufacturing of Eldora, formerly known as Quality Products, after a brief presentation from IVCCD Business Outreach Coordinator Neysa Hartzler. Although IVCCD had partnered with Quality Products in the past, this is the first time they have worked with the company under the H.D. Hudson name. The company, she noted, also hosts in-person leadership classes in Eldora once a month for potential manager candidates.
“It’s kind of a different training than we’ve done before, so it’s kind of exciting,” Hartzler said.
Fisher expressed excitement after Marshalltown Community College (MCC) Provost Robin Lilienthal shared that the school was mentioned in the opening paragraph of a story titled “Everyone Wants to Be a Hispanic Serving Institution” published in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a nationwide newspaper and website geared toward college faculty and staff.
“Robin is being modest. It’s not often that a community college would even be mentioned on the front page,” Fisher said. “Anytime you have major coverage in the Chronicle of a community college, it’s a story, so the fact that it was MCC is really extraordinary.”
IN OTHER BUSINESS, the board:
• Approved a resolution naming the bank depositories for the IVCCD.
• Approved a cybersecurity assessment quote with Winsor Consulting.
• Approved two applications for voluntary early retirement.
