HANOVERTON — Wednesday evening Kyle Miller, project manager and architect from SHP architectural design firm, spoke before United school board members for the first time. Board members selected the Columbus firm to build the new school back in June 2019.

Miller spoke for about 45 minutes, recapping recent events and presenting a projected timeline. He said SHP anticipates groundbreaking next summer, an update from a prior estimate of spring 2023. The school could be operational and ready for students in 2024, Miller said.

The firm’s three-story building plan addresses concerns about keeping the buses and the parent drop-off lines separate enough to be functional. It also preserves the existing auditorium and gym, provides plenty of energy-efficient northern lighting and facilitates career-based clusters of classrooms, Miller said.

The proposed classroom layout will be an improvement from the school’s current setup in terms of security concerns, Superintendent Lance Hostetler said. “In each of those pods in that system, every individual hallway will be able to lock down,” he said.

Miller said during construction the building’s entrance should be safely accessible for business as usual, but he acknowledged some logistics remain to be figured out as the plan develops more.

Hostetler said despite any inconveniences during the construction phase, it will be worth the effort in the long run. “It’s going to be three years of heartburn but you get 50 to 75 years of a good central location. This has a true, nice campus feel,” he said.

“We are not building a building for the next five years,” Miller said. “This is going to be a building that is standing the test of time for you.”

In other business, the board approved $2,350 worth of donations, a 2022 minimum wage and sub wage increase, and the retirement of teacher Douglas Sutton for Oct. 2022. They agreed to table a $14,000 United rebranding agreement with SHP for further discussion.

Before breaking off into an executive session, board members also okayed the Partnerships for Authentic Learning & Leadership agreement at a cost of $7,600.
