Honda has yet to reveal the all-new 2023 Civic Type R, but it's already broken a record. The company announced Thursday that a Type R prototype, shod in camouflage, has set a new lap record for front-wheel-drive vehicles at Suzuka International Racing Course, beating out the old record-holder, the current-generation Type R Limited Edition.
The new Type R was able to set a best lap time of 2:23.12 around Suzuka's standard 3.6-mile configuration on March 14, 2022. That's 0.873 seconds quicker than the 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition that set the record in 2021.
The car looks sharp and composed in the onboard footage of the lap published by Honda YouTube channel on Thursday. Though a good deal of the interior trim is camouflaged, it's clear the Type R will use the same layout as the normal Civic inside. Considering how much we love the new car's cabin, it's something to look forward to.
The 2023 Civic Type R is expected to retain its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, manual transmission, and front-wheel-drive layout. But expect to see big changes to the exterior and aerodynamics. Seeing as how it's able to lap Suzuka quicker than a track-focused version of the outgoing car, we should also expect to see upgrades to the tires, brakes, and suspension components.
Honda has yet to reveal when it plans to show off the production 2023 Type R, but considering it's already out and about breaking records, we suspect it won't be long until we lay our eyes on it.
