ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - Rowan County, there is a new type of yellow school bus in town. Rowan-Salisbury Schools (RSS) will be the first school district in the state to pilot a new type of school bus, a Minotour Type A Bus.
As a part of the pilot, RSS is responsible for tracking bus routes, student data, the advantages of its smaller size, and unlike full-size yellow buses, the Minotour Type A does not require a commercial driver’s license (CDL). This type of yellow bus has been utilized as an activity bus throughout the state but never as an actual school bus.
The RSS Exceptional Children Department purchased the bus and it will be outfitted with all passenger safety equipment; including a walking arm, stop sign, flashing amber and red lights, and it is marked as SCHOOL BUS.
“I am so excited about what this bus means for our students. This is a year in the making,” said Director of Exceptional Children Dr. Elizabeth Mitcham.
The bus will be able to stop in the roadway and make passenger stops just as a full-size bus would. The bus can carry ten students in addition to two students in wheelchairs since the bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift.
“The addition of this bus will enable our district to serve students with unique requirements better, and we are very excited to be a part of this pilot,” said Director of Transportation Tim Beck. “I can see this as a huge win for RSS and the entire state once the pilot has ended.”
