The new Civic Type R is nearly upon us. After months of teasers from Honda and a lap record at Suzuka, the 2023 iteration of the hottest hatch from Japan will make its debut in June, according to a brand official from Australia.
Honda Australia director Stephen Collins confirmed to Australian publication Carsales that the new Type R will debut in the coming month.
“It [the new Civic Type R] will be shown in the full—there’s been a lot of camouflaged stuff shown—in June during the European summer,” Collins told Carsales.
Like the current Type R, we expect this new model to come packing a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making north of 300 hp. Expect power to get to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. More specs, along with performance numbers, should come along with the reveal.
The new Civic Type R has been a long time coming. First spied in 2020, it wasn't until October of last year when we got our first official look at the car. Last month, Honda took a camouflaged 2023 Type R to Suzuka circuit in Japan to break the track's front-wheel-drive lap record, previously held by the current Type R Limited Edition. Whether the brand plans to re-take the front-drive Nürburgring record has yet to be determined, though we would be surprised if Honda didn't give it a shot.
