Flat-earthers might change their beliefs after watching the Civic Type R complete its trip to 150 mph, which requires so much pavement—8389 feet of it—that the white Honda seemed to disappear over the horizon. In the time it took for the GT3 RS to make two runs, the Civic was busy completing a single pass down in the here-be-dragons territory of the Oscoda airport map.

The Civic launches hard, but it's a handful, all bog or boil as the front tires find either too little traction or too much. The best move was to zing the tach to 3500 rpm, ease out the clutch, get a little wheelspin, and then apply a breath of half-throttle before going wide open. At 100 mph, the Civic has a lead on the Elantra, 13.1 seconds to 13.3, its 315 horsepower seeming to assert itself over the Elantra's 276. But as speeds climb, the Honda's aerodynamics and gearing prove a liability that sheer muscle can't overcome. The Type R is optimized for road courses, where 150 mph is mostly theoretical, so Honda probably didn't worry about the ratio gap between fifth and sixth gear. The upshift comes at about 145 mph, at which point aerodynamic drag temporarily gains an advantage in the arm-wrestling match against horsepower. "This might be the only car here that slows down during the acceleration portion of the run," observed senior technical editor David Beard. From there, the Honda's track-ready brakes made a good showing, bringing the Civic to a stop in 674 feet, good for sixth place overall.

It takes its time, but if we'd told our 1998 counterparts that we'd planned to do 150 mph at an airport in a Honda Civic, they probably would have assumed we were dropping it from a C-130.
