O’Brien County, Iowa — At previous meetings the O’Brien County Conservation Board heard from some county residents who requested that some conservation board land be opened up for horseback riding, hiking trails and other uses. No decision on thee topic was made at that time.
At their September meeting O’Brien County Sportsmen’s Club President John Farrell told the Conservation Board, as reported by the O’Brien County Bell-Times-Courier Newspaper, “the consensus of his board was, “no horse traffic on any hunting grounds in O’Brien County.”
At the Conservation Board’s October meeting, the newspaper reported, “Responding to the OCCB request for interested parties to attend an OCCB meeting to learn more about the organization’s programs and get involved in creating and supporting additional programs and uses, about 30 members of the public attended the regular monthly meeting of OCCB in October. Every person attending demonstrated support for adding horse trail riding as an acceptable use of the public lands.” The article also said, “Darwin Dau, an OCCB board member stood and announced to the crowd that work for horse trails was already underway. He explained that he and Assistant Director Amber Wetherell had already broken out the maps of the lands and were working on drawing trails and other activities designed to provide a horseback outdoor activity for the public. He said the project is expected to take about 2 years.
The O’Brien County Conservation Board has the issue of “Multiple Usage Areas” on the agenda for their November 11th meeting, with the agenda listing several county residents as speaking on the issue. For its part, the O’Brien County Sportsmen’s Club sent a letter to it’s membership late last week reiterating their position that their board is opposed to the use of county land for horseback riding, due to the “negative impact it will have on our county public lands and hunting opportunities.” The letter went on to urge Sportsmen’s Club members to make their opinions known to the Conservation Board, either by attending Wednesday night’s meeting, or by contacting the individual O’Brien County Conservation Board members. The letter went on to say, “(We) feel thirty-plus years of fundraising to buy hunting ground, plus all the other projects the (Sportsmen’s) Club has helped with over the years should make a difference in how the land is used.”
Wednesday’s meeting of the O’Brien County Conservation Board is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Prairie Heritage Center.
