Stafford MSD board orders position-based trustee elections - Houston Chronicle

The Stafford Municipal School District Board of Trustees has passed a resolution which changes the way trustees are elected to serve on the board.

According to a news release, on Monday, Jan. 11, the board passed the resolution which assigns board members specific numbers on the board and yearly elections will determine who serves.

“Under the new position-based election method, the seven positions on the board are designated by number, and candidates for trustee are voted on and elected separately for specific positions on the board,” according to the district. “A candidate will be designated on the official ballot according to the number of the position for which he or she seeks election.”

Elected trustees will continue to serve the entire school district at large. Terms will last for three years.

Stafford Municipal School District serves about 3,600 students in Fort Bend County. It includes six school campuses, including Elementary School, Middle School, High School and the College Career Center with new campuses for STEM Magnet Academy, Middle School, and Early Childhood Center. “The new position-based election method represents a change from past elections, in which trustees were elected using the ‘at large’ method of election,” the district reported. “Under the ‘at large’ election method, the candidates receiving the highest number of votes filled the positions up for election. For example, if three positions were up for election, the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes were elected.”

Up first for election in the May 1, 2021, general election will be positions 1 and 2, currently held by Xavier Herrera and Manual Hinojosa, respectively. The winners of the races for postion 1 and 2 will serve terms which end in May 2024.

The resolution also designated the numbers of remaining board positions and the years during which they will be up for election:

  Position 3, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by Ash Hamirani);

  Position 4, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by Greg Holsapple);

  Position 5, up for election in May 2022 (currently held by Alicia Lacy-Castille);

  Position 6, up for election in May 2023 (currently held by Christopher Caldwell);

  Position 7, up for election in May 2023 (currently held by Jacqueline Jean-Baptiste).
