BEMUS POINT — Type 1 diabetes is a disease that affects many people throughout the world and one that is yet to have a known cure.

On Saturday, local families impacted by the disease are hosting a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation “One Walk for a Cure” at 2:45 p.m. in Bemus Point. The event will be held with proper COVID-19 precautions, and the community is asked to come out and cheer on the local type 1 diabetes families as they walk.

One of the event organizers, Lori Cornell, described the three main purposes for the event: getting people down to the walk to come and support them; to get other families impacted by Type 1 diabetes aware of the walk; and to invite them to come join, and to get donations toward finding a cure.

The walk begins at the Bemus Point Golf Course at 2 p.m.

“We have been fortunate enough to already raise $30,000 from friends and family,” Cornell said. “But, if anyone else is willing to donate, they can do so on my Facebook page, or on Traci Thompson’s.”

Cornell also thanked Thompson, another organizer of the event, for her work, along with Bryce Steffan and his wife Rachel — owners of the Bemus Point Golf Course — for hosting the event, and the 20 type 1 diabetes families that will be participating Saturday.

Also during the walk there will be separate collection canisters found at the Bemus Point Golf Course.

The walk is personal for many of the organizers. Steffan was diagnosed with adult-onset type 1 diabetes several years ago. Both Thompson and Cornell are type 1 diabetes mothers. Cornell is a parent to two children with the disease — her sons Ben and Zach.

Ben Cornell, 15, described having the disease as challenging. “It really is a constant struggle,” he said. “It never really goes away.”

He added that Saturday’s walk means a lot to him because it brings awareness to the disease, and with the help of donations, brings the possibility of a cure closer to reality.

“I think the walk is the best chance of helping us reach our goal of finding a cure,” Ben Cornell said.

For Lori Cornell, events such as the “One Walk” are critical for the future of those with type 1 diabetes and their families.

“As a mother with two type 1 diabetes children this research and money from donations is critical for the future,” she said. “It really just shows the needed continued support to find a cure for this challenging disease, and can really make a difference.”

Anyone interested in joining the walk or making a donation can contact Lori Cornell at 720-1845.
