Update 11:16 a.m.

Three Collin College trustees are leading their reelection bids as ongoing controversies at the school loomed over their run, according to unofficial results.

The college system made national headlines over allegations of retaliation and its handling of the pandemic. Protestors have criticized administrators for letting go of three women who criticized the school’s COVID-19 response.

Three seats were up for grabs as longtime trustees sought another six-year term, including Jim Orr, Andy Hardin and Bob Collins, who has been on the board since the founding of the school in 1985.

Orr and Collins both lead in close races with a little more than half of the votes in their respective races, according to the early returns. Hardin, who runs a bookkeeping and payroll business, had the strongest lead with nearly two thirds of the votes.

This includes early voting and election day results.

Their opponents — Helen Chang, Jacoby Stewart Sr. and Misty Irby — called administrators out for not welcoming input from faculty, adding that this instilled fear within the college community.

The three opponents said that, if elected, they would push for a stronger system of shared governance, more transparency and diversity on the board and at the college.

Last month, nearly 90 people gathered to protest the school officials’ handling of free speech. Many then went into nearby Collin County neighborhoods to encourage residents to go vote and discuss what has been happening at the college.

Former congressional candidate Mike Siegel, now political director of the voter registration group Register2Vote, said that because off-year elections “get very little public participation,” those who voted have a big hand in deciding the future of the college.
