June 16 was the last Zoom conference Boothbay Planning Board meeting. The board voted 5-0 to follow selectmen’s lead and discontinue Zoom meetings due to the coronavirus state of emergency ending June 30. In other action, the board approved Martha L. Simpson’s request to add two additions to a non-conforming structure at Simpson’s 14 Shore Road property. Simpson plans a 72 square foot addition over a deck and a 60 square foot addition over a porch and walkway. The property is in a coastal residential and shoreline overlay zone.
Simpson lives in Brunswick and the Boothbay property is a summer home. Her application was tabled last month after planning board members requested updated map drawings and calculations for the additions. Members also conducted a site review on May 25. Two abutters had concerns about whether or not Simpson was following regulations for non-conforming structures in the shoreline overlay zone. Chairman William Wright assured them the board followed all municipal ordinances and Department of Environmental Protection regulations in approving Simpson’s application.
The board also heard a pre-application request from a Gardiner business to rezone Route 27. Jake Pratt represented Sugar Bud Farms about operating a medicinal marijuana dispensary near Boothbay Collision. Highly Cannaco sells medical marijuana and is zoned as part of the Industrial Park. But across the street, there is a different zone which doesn’t allow medical marijuana sales. The board will hold workshops to decide the best option. One is amending the zoning maps. Another would allow medicinal marijuana sales in the commercial corridor.
The board meets next at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 21 in the municipal building’s conference room.
