FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Fort Wayne's NBC) - School board members with East Allen County Schools and Southwest Allen County Schools have it on their agenda to discuss masking at their schools Tuesday.
Nicole Varney has a 6th grader in SACS and she says she's hoping they mandate masks.
"So far, in the first week and a half she got COVID," Varney said. “She had a 103-degree fever, so she had to go to the emergency room so it was pretty severe.”
Varney says she believes if all students were wearing masks her daughter would have stayed healthy.
"It was difficult for whole family," she said. "She wore her mask the whole time she was in school but other kids did not, so that’s how she got it.”
At SACS and EACS masks are reccommended at this time - not required.
Both boards are set to meet Tuesday evening.
EACS will meet at 6:30p.m. in New Haven and they have on their agenda and action items to discuss 'a revised return to school plan and updated mask policy'.
SACS will meet at 7:00p.m. and board members will consider a 'revision of the return to classroom plan'.
Varney says she is at high-risk for COVID-19, and luckily when her daughter had it she did not catch it as well.
"The doctors tell me, if I were to get it, it would not be good for me," she said. "That’s a fear my daughter has to live with, bringing the virus home to her mother.”
She says she's hoping the school board members consider her situation and other people who are at high-risk when they make their decision Tuesday.
"This is very important to my family, it’s life or death," Varney said. "Please consider those families that are immunocompromised, those are the ones who don’t really have a voice but should have a voice.”
Both EACS and SACS meetings are open to the public.
