AUSD Notes: Alameda school board to name its new president soon - East Bay Times

As noted in my last column, the Alameda Unified School District’s Board of Education is in the midst of a process to appoint a community member as board president, the seat left vacant when former Board President Mia Bonta became Assemblymember for the 18th District.

The Alameda Unified School District’s interim Board of Education President Jennifer Williams, above, will entertain motions from the board at its Oct. 12 meeting to appoint a candidate board president, the seat left vacant when former Board President Mia Bonta became Assemblymember for the 18th District. Seven people have applied to the position (the deadline was Oct. 1), and we at the AUSD thank these candidates for stepping forward to serve the students, families and staff of Alameda Unified. Here’s what happens next: This week, the candidates’ applications are being posted to the agenda of the Oct. 12 meeting (alameda.novusagenda.com/agendapublic), as well as our Board Vacancy webpage (www.alamedaunified.org/boardvacancy).

At the Oct. 12 evening meeting, candidates will each give a 3-minute opening statement (names will be drawn randomly to determine the order). Each of the four seated Board of Education members and three student board members will then have an opportunity to interview each candidate for three minutes. At the close of the final round of questions, interim Board of Education President Jennifer Williams will entertain motions from the board to appoint a candidate.

Once that motion is seconded, the board will discuss and then vote on the candidate. If there is no second, that candidate will not be considered. In the event that a majority of the board does not approve any candidate, board members will be able to move to reconsider a previous motion for a candidate.

A provisional appointment will be made at either the Oct. 12 or Oct. 26 meeting. The appointee will then stay in office until November 2022, when the next regular Board of Education election takes place. Community members who would like to watch that board meeting can tune in via Zoom (the link will be available via the agenda). We also stream our meetings on the AUSD’s Facebook page (facebook.com/AlamedaUnified).

Vaccine mandate: In other news, the AUSD released a statement Oct. 2 in response to California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s announcement of a vaccination mandate for all state public and private school students ages 12 to 15. The state mandate will go into effect when the FDA approves the vaccination for that age group (currently it has emergency use authorization only).

Although the AUSD has advocated for student vaccinations and held vaccination clinics here in Alameda, the district has held off on issuing its own vaccination mandate for the last month or so due to concerns about legality (typically the state issues vaccine mandates), equity and uncertainty about being able to provide independent study for families who don’t want their students vaccinated. As noted in the statement on our homepage (www.alamedaunified.org), however, ultimately we support the governor’s announcement and look forward to receiving more details about how it will be implemented.

Susan Davis is the Alameda Unified School District’s senior manager for community affairs. Reach her at 510-337-7175 or sdavis@alameda.k12.ca.us.
