Planning Board skeptical of developer's mid-island “new downtown” - The Inquirer and Mirror

(May 13, 2021) Planning Board members this week expressed considerable skepticism about a Boston developer’s vision for several Sparks Avenue properties – plans that would radically alter the look of the mid-island neighborhood.

“The design is decidedly un-Nantucket- like, not familiar at all with building with Nantucket in mind,” board chair Judith Wegner said Monday night.

The plans call for an attached mixed-use development with a bowling alley, Apple Store, health club, relocated Downyflake restaurant, pizzeria, short-term rental office space and 35-40 second-floor apartments, with both above-ground and underground parking.

Developer Christopher Fiumara, co-founder of Crowd Lending Inc., a real-estate investment firm, has called the project 'the new downtown.' It will meet all zoning requirements, he said, which allow for building heights of 40 feet and 50 percent ground cover.
