ROXBURY, NJ – Roxbury School Board President Carol Scheneck on Monday was chosen by her colleagues on the board to serve another term at the helm.

The unanimous decision took place at the board’s annual reorganization meeting, a session held remotely via WebEx. The board also re-named board member Dan Masi as vice-president.

Roxbury Schools Business Administrator Joseph Mondanaro presided over the swearing-in of re-elected board members Joseph Bocchino IV, Heather Champagne and Anne Colucci who won re-election in November to new 3-year-long terms.

Scheneck, a Succasunna lawyer, first became board president in January 2020. She replaced former Roxbury School Board President Leo Coakley, who remains on the board.

During Monday’s meeting, Scheneck expressed optimism for 2021.

“This board will continue to face difficult challenges this year as we did last year,” she said. “I would like to wish everybody a happy, healthy and productive new year, and I look forward to working with all of you in this year of great hope.”

Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic played off Scheneck’s comment. “Interestingly, my prior board president used to say, ‘We’ll come up with a phrase or a word that’s going to be The Year of,’” Radulic said. “And I think Carol just did it; I think this is going to be The Year of Hope.”

Radulic stressed the importance of the relationship between a district superintendent and the school board leadership.

“It’s one where you do have to have a shared vision, a shared commitment to the district and a passion for what we do for our students,” she said. “I’ve been incredibly fortunate in this district to have served with three presidents who have shared that with me.”

The superintendent said she plans to make an announcement on Jan. 14 relating to whether Roxbury schools can return to at least some level of in-classroom instruction. "It is my desire to open the schools ... and to move forward," she said. "But as much as I want to do that, I have to have conversations with our local health officials and I do need to see what the trends are in Roxbury before that decision can truly be made."
