A new agreement related to virtual learning for the North Harrison Community School Corp. was approved Thursday night during a regular school board meeting.
Megan Reynolds, the virtual coordinator for kindergarten to grade 6, gave an update to the board on how virtual learning was going for North Harrison students. Currently, there are 95 virtual students for K-6 and 223 virtual students for grades 7-12.
Reynolds presented videos to the board that showcased how the virtual learning programs — Buzz for K-6 and Edmentum for 7-12 — work. Both are self-paced curriculum that track how long students are logged in, the amount of time they spend on each subject and the completed work. She explained the administration is continually polling teachers to better understand what they like and dislike in order to improve the programs.
“Overall, we are proud of how well North Harrison has adapted to virtual instruction,” Reynolds said. “Obviously, we would prefer to have the kids in classrooms, but our teachers and students have learned to adapt quickly to these programs, and they have only gotten better as time has gone on.”
The board of trustees voted unanimously to approve a proposal in collaboration with AdTech and Five-Star Technology Solutions for internet access and wide area network services. The board agreed to engage with Education Networks of America for both services, a company it has worked with for the past 15 years.
The length of the agreement is 36 months at $878 a month, a savings of $352 over the previous 36-month agreement.
The new agreement, which will become effective July 1, still maintains internet capacity of 1,000 MB.
At the beginning of the meeting, the first of 2021, the board welcomed Eric Stroud, who was elected to succeed Gregg Oppel, who decided not to run for re-election.
Veronica Battista, who served as president of the board for the past 10 years, nominated Marla Adams to serve as president. Adams was unanimously elected.
“Ten years is a long time to lead anything,” said Battista. “I am ready for Marla to take over, and I know she is the perfect person for the position and the responsibility.”
Superintendent Dr. Lance Richards presented Battista, who was attending the meeting virtually, with a gavel that was engraved with her name and time as president for the board to showcase the administration’s appreciation for her.
“We deeply appreciate your service as president to the board for 10 years,” Richards said. “The community owes you a debt of gratitude for your constant support and fight for the best interest of the staff, students and community of North Harrison.”
Kerry Ingle was unanimously elected as vice president, and Steve Hanger was unanimously chosen to retain his position as secretary.
In other business, the board approved the following appointments: Kira Gibson and Kendall Beyerle, high school softball varsity assistant facilitators; Collin Book, junior varsity softball coach; Haley Book, varsity softball coach; Sarah Shelton, high school band marching tech; Chris Koutsoubos and Micah Napper, high school baseball volunteers; and Tony Waynescott, varsity assistant baseball coach.
The board of trustees is scheduled to meet again on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. in the North Harrison Middle School cafeteria.
