GRANGER — The Highland Local Schools Board of Education agreed to not hold teacher evaluations for the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the Feb. 22 meeting, Superintendent Catherine Aukerman discussed a change to Ohio’s Educator Evaluation System this year. She explained due to the COVID-19 pandemic, school boards now have the option to elect not to conduct an evaluation of a teacher, school counselor, administrator or superintendent for the current school year if the board believes it is impossible or impractical to do so.
Aukerman said she believes the full evaluation cycle for educators in the district cannot be completed this year, citing such factors as switching from remote learning to hybrid learning and/or in-person learning.
The board then approved a motion declaring it impossible and impractical to complete the full evaluation cycle for educators due to the pandemic and approved the COVID-19 evaluation exemption.
Also during the meeting, the board approved the following:
• the technology specifications for the new elementary school buildings and middle school renovation;
• the academic school calendars for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years;
• donations to the district and to the high school boys and girls golf teams, as well as the girls soccer team;
• the use of school facilities for various functions and waiving of associated fees;
• agreements with Stark State College and The University of Akron for the College Credit Plus program;
• contracts and/or agreements with Rea & Associates, SchoolPointe and Yankel & Associates; and
• various personnel items.
The next board meeting is set for March 15 at 7 p.m. at the Media Center in Highland High School, 4150 Ridge Road.
