Dr. Brent Shropshire is ready for northwest Georgia to be heard on a national level.
In late February, the college readiness and wellness specialist for Bartow County Schools was elected to the College Board Southern Regional Council, an advisory team made up of college admissions officers, school counselors, teachers and school district personnel from across the Southeast that works to provide input on new initiatives and ways the College Board can improve some of its practices.
"As the college readiness and wellness specialist and counselor coordinator of the Bartow County School System, I wanted to be on the council to give Bartow County and northwest Georgia a voice with College Board," he said. "I will bring new suggestions and ideas to College Board."
Shropshire, 51, I said he was "excited when I received the notification of being elected."
"A council member resigned due to getting a promotion and taking on extra responsibilities," he said. "The new vacancy allowed me to put my name in the hat to run. Since it was a recent vacancy, I ran unopposed."
The Calhoun resident said his initial term will be for one year, but he will have the option of running again for a three-year term after that first year.
Superintendent Dr. Phillip Page said the school district is "extremely proud of Dr. Shropshire and his appointment to the College Board Southern Regional Council."
"He brings more than 20 years of professional experience and knowledge to the council and Bartow County School System," he said. "While on the advisory team, Dr. Shropshire will work alongside college admissions officers and many other leaders in public education. We are excited to one day bring those professionals in to gain knowledge in the student transcript and college application areas. That will help countless Bartow County high school students as they pursue higher education opportunities."
The council meets three times a year, according to Shropshire.
Two regional meetings in June and September will take place somewhere in the Southeast — the locations rotate from year to year — and the third meeting is during The College Board Forum, held in New York this year, in October.
Shropshire is no stranger to the College Board, serving for one year as the associate director of counselor relationship management for the nation's largest nonprofit, college-going organization, which helps millions of students navigate the transition from high school to college each year through programs like the SAT, Advanced Placement and BigFuture.
He also worked as a counselor at five high schools and as a career guidance and counseling program specialist for the Georgia Department of Education for one year before taking over the newly created position of college readiness and wellness specialist in September.
An alumnus of Clemson University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, Shropshire also holds a Master of Education in human development counseling with a concentration in school counseling from Vanderbilt University, an education specialist in administration and supervision from Lincoln Memorial University and a doctorate in K-12 educational leadership from Capella University.
