There have been many debates about what is the best type in Pokemon, and it's very hard to argue against the newest type: Fairy. By itself, it's great defensively; it completely walls a very strong type in Dragon, while also resisting Bug, Fighting, and Dark. Meanwhile, it's weak to two subpar offensive types: Poison and Steel.
All of that is good, but how well does it stand on its own? Even for a relatively new type, there's already enough pure Fairy-types to make a list and rank them from worst to best, including the older Pokemon that gained the type retroactively. While some don't have much besides the typing, others take advantage of it in great ways.
10 Granbull
Being a former Normal-type, Granbull having a wide pool of moves isn't too much of a surprise. In fact, the only Fairy-type move it knows is Play Rough, which is honestly all it needs, already having endless variety for potential coverage moves. It also helps having Intimidate — a solid, reliable ability that can cripple potential physical attackers on the other team.
So why is it at the bottom of this list? To be blunt, its stats are terrible. It's got nothing besides 120 Attack. It doesn't have the Speed to deal attacks nor the defensive stats to stay on the field. Do what you can to remedy its weaknesses, but at least one of them is going to stick out like a sore thumb.
9 Alcremie
Alcremie just edges out Granbull to avoid being the worst pure Fairy-type competitively speaking, though it isn't by much. While Granbull can only play one role and can't even play it well, Alcremie has potential for multiple roles on a competitive team, but can't necessarily play any of them reliably.
It's certainly better on the special side, having 110 Special Attack and 121 Special Defense. It's got a pretty decent movepool with nice STAB and coverage moves, and a decent ability in Aroma Veil that could give it a support role. It has the parts to play certain roles, but other Pokemon can play them better and put more focus into them.
8 Aromatisse
If nothing else, Aromatisse at least provides nice support for a team with plenty of attackers. It has the nice ability, Aroma Veil, to protect it from the effects of Taunt and other such conditions. That helps it further in executing moves such as Wish and Heal Bell to play the cleric role for a team, or Toxic and Encore to negatively affect the opponent.
The question is whether or not it's the best in said role, and it honestly isn't. There are other Pokemon have better bulk and can stay on the field for longer. There are also other Pokemon that can provide better offense in a pinch, with Aromatisse just having Moonblast and Psychic as reliable attacking moves and a slightly modest 99 Special Attack.
7 Slurpuff
You'd be forgiven for not expecting much from Slurpuff thanks to its underwhelming base stat total. However, it has the perfect storm of moves and abilities to be quite useful given the right support around it.
It has Unburden as an ability, speeding up upon losing a held item. Therefore, it's best used alongside a terrain setter like one of the Alolan Guardians while holding a terrain seed. It's got a unique learnset, having access to gems like Misty Explosion (which makes it a particularly good sidekick to Tapu Fini), Sticky Web, Aromatherapy, Belly Drum, STAB moves, and coverage from multiple types. It could use some help in defeating its checks though, as it's in a tight spot when faced with a Steel-type.
6 Comfey
Purely by moveset and ability, Comfey is arguably the best healer in Pokemon. That's mainly due to its signature ability, Triage, which gives its healing moves +3 priority. That ability's utilized best by moves such as Draining Kiss, Giga Drain, Synthesis, and even Floral Healing to heal its allies in a Doubles battle.
When it comes to stats, its HP is exceptionally low, but that helps it heal up more easily and is backed up by good defense anyway. If you're considering using it for offense, it might need a bit of help to improve its 90 Special Attack, though it has access to Calm Mind for that. Aside from the healing moves, some attacking staples include Dazzling Gleam, Grass Knot, and Energy Ball.
5 Florges
If there's anything that stands out with Florges, it's that incredible 154 Special Defense. That, along with its wide movepool, has guaranteed it a role as a great utility Pokemon with decent offense firepower at 112 Special Attack. Said movepool includes healing moves like Synthesis, Wish, and Aromatherapy, support moves like Defog and Toxic, and offensive moves like Dazzling Gleam, Moonblast, and Giga Drain.
Its flaws aren't obvious, but they can be costly when exploited. It has terrible physical Defense, so any decently strong Steel-type attack will probably knock it out. It also doesn't have any useful ability for Singles battling, with the effects of both Flower Veil and Symbiosis exclusively seen in Doubles.
4 Sylveon
As soon as it was introduced, Sylveon instantly made a name for itself as a great utility Pokemon, having access to the Wish and Heal Bell combo that is standard to most clerics, as well as excellent bulk. What made it stand out even more among that crowd were its offensive capabilities.
While its Special Attack is good but not spectacular at 110, it's been blessed with one of the best abilities for Fairy-types: Pixilate. Normal-type attacks become Fairy-type and gain a 20% boost in power alongside the STAB. That ability's been utilized most often with Hyper Voice, a straightforward, powerful special Normal-type move at 90 base power.
3 Clefable
Unquestionably the best of the former Normal-types, Clefable has put its pure Fairy-typing to good use. At the very least, it can act solely as a wall to offensive Dragon-types and most special attackers, with its weaknesses not being too common on the offensive end.
That can be hard to believe, especially since its stats aren't that great besides its good special stats and HP. What makes it great is the movepool that puts those stats to use. Its most infamous moves are Wish or Soft-Boiled for healing, Calm Mind for setting up, Moonblast for STAB, and Flamethrower or Thunderbolt for coverage. It also has one of the best abilities in the game, Magic Guard, which protects it from hazard and status effect damage.
2 Xerneas
The first Legendary Pokemon on the list and the first to be banned to Ubers, Xerneas has proven to be one of the most dangerous offensive Pokemon in that tier.
That's mainly because of Geomancy, its signature move, which boosts Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed by two stages each. While it being a two-turn move sort of requires Xerneas to hold a Power Herb, that's a worthy sacrifice to make considering the benefits of having that big a stat boost in three stats. It helps that its Special Attack is already so high, and that aside from STAB, its Fairy-type moves get boosted even further from its ability, Fairy Aura. If you can get the Geomancy off unscathed, Xerneas will plow through its competition.
1 Zacian
Its Fairy-Steel Crowned form does not make this list, but it doesn't need that kind of validation anyway. It's so overpowered that it can't even be used in Ubers. Still, Zacian in its Hero of Many Battles form is almost unstoppable even without the Steel-typing or Behemoth Blade.
Despite nearly all of its stats being exceptional, it's clearly meant to be used as a sweeper with its spectacular 130 Attack and 138 Speed. In terms of moves, it's got everything it needs: Play Rough for STAB, Close Combat to cover Steel-types, Psychic Fangs to cover Poison-types, and Swords Dance for set-up. Then again, it might not need any setting up thanks to Intrepid Sword, its signature ability that gives it a boost to Attack upon entry.
