AVON, Ohio -- Avon Board of Education member Heather Mahoney has resigned because she is moving out of state, and the school board is seeking applicants to fill her seat.

Mahoney was elected to the board in 2011 to fill a board vacancy. She successfully ran for re-election in 2013.

The certified fitness instructor and yoga teacher was born and raised in Louisville, Ohio, and has lived in Avon since 2006, after moving back from a stint in Gilbert, Ariz.

As well as serving on the Board of Education as both president and vice president during her tenure, she and her husband, Michael, also were very active in the PTA.

The couple is moving due to her husband’s company, SPX Brands, offering virtual working conditions that have been developing over the past months.

“We chose South Carolina, because we love the ocean and the weather,” said Mahoney. “Our three boys are excited about it, because they can do more fishing and boating. It was the nature aspect of the state that was attractive to us. So, we will be chasing the sun.”

Those interested in applying for Mahoney’s school board seat must have applications in by May 17. The Board of Education will review applications in an executive session following the regularly scheduled May 18 school board meeting.

Interviews will take place the following week and the new board member will be announced the week of May 31.

The newly appointed member will serve until Dec. 31, 2021. If the appointed member desires to continue serving, they will have to run in the November 2021 General Election.
