The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a need to further meet Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) goals, have presented a need for increased communication between Dixon Unified School District and the community.

To that end, DUSD is working to establish a new public information officer position — referred to as the coordinator of outreach, engagement and innovation — to serve that function. The Dixon school board will be voting on a job description for this position at its Thursday meeting.

Cindy Nguyen, the district’s executive director of human resources and employee relations, wrote in a staff report that a number of factors necessitated the need for such a role. The first was to meet the district’s third LCAP goal, which aims to “engage families and the community to form active partnerships which ensure the academic and social growth of students.”

Moreover, Nguyen wrote that the LCAP Advisory Committee has talked about the need for the district to take more direct steps in providing additional resources to help achieve this target. She also wrote that recent surveys administered to families have indicated a need for DUSD to take additional steps in engaging families and the community.

Another factor has been the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The typical levels of engagement were largely ended by the closure of schools for more than a year and it will take additional efforts and resources to reestablish them,” she wrote. “New challenges for families have developed as well, and the District has an obligation to address them.”

The outreach coordinator’s responsibilities include working with a large group of families and community stakeholders to develop strategies to respond to potential concerns, collaborating with school sites to plan community events that increase awareness of district programs, working with local agencies and businesses to increase opportunities for student engagement, representing the district’s mission and vision to the community, developing the district’s public relations strategy, serving as the superintendent’s representative and liaison to community leaders and groups, assisting with special projects designated by the superintendent, deliver DUSD news to various media, and many other duties.

Requirements for the job include a valid administrative services credential by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, a minimum of five years experience as a teacher, fingerprint and criminal justice clearance and possession of a negative tuberculosis risk assessment certificate.

The district is stipulating that applicants should be well-versed in public relations, current public education trends, social media use, public speaking, budget preparation and management, knowledge of the DUSD mission and LCAP, and the California Education Code, particularly as it relates to school choice and alternative programs.

A salary for this position has not yet been determined.

In other business, the board will receive an update on planning for the 2021-22 school year and a presentation on the third interim budget report.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday. The meeting can be accessed online at Zoom.us/j/2450190859?pwd=dGNLSUVGRjNlNk1ad1VFamZJcmJGQT09, using the meeting ID 245 019 0859 and the password 5SRcUr. The process for making public comments will be explained by board President Caitlin O’Halloran at the start of the meeting.
