Last year, Japan celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Honda Civic Type R by bringing together hundreds of Type R owners and enthusiasts for the "Civic Type R Meeting 22 Spec" event. That gathering was held at Twin Ring Motegi (now called Mobility Resort Motegi) and attendees were ecstatic about the event that included both a meet and track event for CTRs of all generations.
This year the event returned, but rather than focusing solely on the Civic's "R" designation, it was open to all Type R models and called the Honda Type R All Japan Meeting 2023. Capped at 400 participants, it included some choice vendor booths and would once again take place at a parking lot at Twin Ring.
The day's activities also included an interview with The Drift King, Keiichi Tsuchiya just like last year's event. DK's connection to Honda and the Type R nameplate runs deep as he's spent considerable time behind the wheel of multiple OEM and tuned versions over the years.
Extremely organized, the staff took pride in situating specific models together, even going as far as aligning factory colors next to each other with Championship White of course being the most popular choice of attendees. The model and color grouping continued onto the famed raceway where interested owners had the chance to click off a few laps alongside their fellow chassis owners.
Saclam was on hand to display some of their high-quality exhaust components that might trigger thoughts of late '80s/early '90s Mugen goods, and there's good reason for that. The brand's owner served as an engineer and parts production manager for Mugen for many years and today, the parts being offered reflect the sort of intricate attention to detail and clean, uncluttered styling that harkens back to those early days.
The one that started it all, the rarely seen NSX-R.
At this point, the FK8 Type R is the most accessible and obtainable and this event had plenty on display, as shown in this row of Champ White examples.
The recently released FL5 is still trickling to new owners but as of this day, there were plenty to be found. This row was populated by the popular Boost Blue Pearl versions.
If you thought the FK8 had aggressive styling, then its overseas predecessor, the FK2 might clue you in to just where those wild lines and flared touches came from.
While people continue to complain about the new Integra Type S having four doors (and a quasi-hatch) rather than the two-door style they seem to think only existed, this group of DB8 Type R sedan owners were busy turning laps.
Our friend Takeru Tojo's Mugen RR FD2 next to his fellow L2P team member Siya Suzuki's Mugen-equipped DC2 Type R. Takeru attended last year's event and once again provided photos for us to share.
This FN2 Type R features a Maxton Design front splitter that's been color matched to the bumper. Originally intended for the European market, Japan received two limited batches of the quirkily shaped three-door that was dubbed the Civic Type R Euro for the JDM market.
Of the entire Civic Type R family, the EK9 is arguably the most revered. Serving as the Civic line's first chassis to be blessed with Type R DNA, the lightweight, traditional-style hatchback and its hyperactive B16B became an instant hit upon its debut and continues to be highly sought after by countless fans. This one, simply lowered on its stock wheels, is the stuff of dreams for many U.S. Honda enthusiasts.
The most popular aftermarket wheels fitted to the various Type R in attendance undeniably came from the Rays Wheel family. The group brought out this display that featured a handful of styles from their Volk Racing and GramLIGHTS series.
