Extending an agreement with an organization whose activities include a Rome school district “equity task force” that began meeting last January will be considered by the Board of Education tonight, along with several personnel appointments.
Among other items before the board will be an annual membership in the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) whose approval has not been unanimous in several prior years.
The board is anticipated to begin today with a 5 p.m. closed executive session to hear a student discipline appeal, and then a 6 p.m. regular meeting including department reports for educational programs and people operations followed by the overall agenda at 7 p.m.
The meeting is not open for public attendance due to COVID-19 considerations. The public can access it through a virtual Zoom format using a link at https://ift.tt/2JGlthZ online.
• A resolution calls for approval of a memorandum of understanding between ACCESS Global Group, LLC, and the school district for the purpose of professional development and facilitation of the district’s equity task force.
“It’s an extension of our current agreement,” district Superintendent Peter C. Blake said Wednesday. The ACCESS organization has been facilitating the work of the equity task force in seeking to improve cultural competency, social awareness and educational equity in the district including impacts on students.
The task force, with about 20 members including various segments of the school district and community, met last January and February before its sessions were affected by COVID-19 impacts; Blake said in September it was on pause, but noted Wednesday it now has been meeting again.
The task force was organized after being recommended to the school board by Dr. Shanelle R. Benson Reid of the ACCESS organization who had been consulting the district. She had expressed concern regarding comments and attitudes she found at Rome Free Academy and Strough Middle School about students and families who come from diverse circumstances and situations, including some staff member comments.
• Proposed instructional appointments and pro-rated salaries include Nadine Paul, special education teacher, long-term substitute, Bellamy Elementary School, $53,385; Mary Serfass, teacher assistant, RFA, $16,276.
Among some of the proposed non-instructional appointments and pro-rated salaries are principal account clerks Mary “Carol” VanCourt (health insurance) and Kimberly Seifert (payroll), both $42,000; PC specialists Darlene Plumb, $34,801, and Ruby Peede, $28,000; computer specialists (training) Rochelle Fazekas, Gansevoort Elementary School, $34,600, and Susan Alger, Denti Elementary School, $33,600.
• A resolution calls for the board to approve the annual NYSSBA membership for 2021 for $12,105.
Prior approvals for the membership have included one opposing vote each in 2019 and 2018 plus two opposing votes each in 2017 and 2015. Opposing board members have said that for some services offered, the district can get them on its own. But other members have praised NYSSBA services such as professional development assistance and lobbying for educational needs.
