KALAMAZOO, MI -- Two new trustees will soon be joining the board at Western Michigan University.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appointed Kurtis Trevan and A. Alan Turfe as the newest members of the Board of Trustees, to begin in 2021, according to a press release from the university.

Trevan, of Grand Rapids, is the CEO of Gun Lake Investments and an alumnus of the university. Turfe, of Northville, is the board chair of DocShop Pro., a medical supplies company, the release said.

“We are pleased to welcome Trustees Trevan and Turfe,” President Edward Montgomery said. “I look forward to the expertise and insights they will add to the board as we work together to advance our university and its goals to help students pursue their goals, maintain well-being and prepare for meaningful careers.”

The new board members, whose eight-year terms begin Jan. 1, 2021, and run through Dec. 31, 2028, replace current Chair James B. Bolger and Trustee David Behen.

The Board of Trustees will elect a new chairperson and other officers when members convene in 2021. The board’s first meeting of the year is set for Jan. 21.

Trevan is also the co-founder of Gun Lake Investments, the release said. According to the governor’s office, he is a citizen of the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians and previously served as treasurer for the Tribal Council and member of the Gun Lake Casino Board of Directors, the release said.

Turfe serves as chair of the advisory boards of NEMO Health and STEL Technologies. He currently serves as a private equity consultant and strategic advisor related to medical devices, life science and health care mergers and acquisitions. Turfe formerly served as chairman and CEO of J M Smith Corp. and president of Anatomical Pathology at Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Outgoing trustees Behen and Bolger will each end their terms with the board on Dec. 31.

Bolger served in the Michigan State Police for over 26 years, retiring in 1999. Behen has served as chief information officer and vice president at La-Z-Boy Inc. since June 2017.

Another WMU trustee, Ron Kitchens, recently announced he is stepping down as the CEO of Southwest Michigan First, effective Jan. 15. Kitchens told MLive he has accepted a similar role at an organization in Alabama that will be announced next week. The move, he said, is being made to be closer to family.

Paula Davis, spokesperson for WMU, said the move does not preclude Kitchens from continuing in his role as trustee. Kitchens could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon.
