LANSING, MI – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has fired back at President Donald Trump after he suggested she should face sanctions for pursuing sanctions against lawyers questioning the legitimacy of the 2020 election.
“These lawyers are true patriots who are fighting for the truth and, obviously, getting very close,” Trump tweeted on Sunday. “AG should be sanctioned. Fight on!”
Nessel said last week that she’s considering pursuing sanctions because she believes several pro-Trump lawyers who filed lawsuits seeking to overturn November’s election results mangled facts, effectively undermining the electoral process by pushing unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud.
“We need to go back to a time where you can trust an attorney is making an accurate and truthful representation to the court, because if they don’t, then they won’t be able to practice law anymore,” Nessel said in a news release on Christmas Eve.

Nessel, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and especially Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer have faced constant criticism from the president on a wide variety of topics since Michigan voters elected them in 2018.
Sunday’s tweet was the latest direct attack from the president. Nessel responded shortly after it was posted.
“A patriot is a person who vigorously defends their country against its enemies and detractors,” she wrote. “History will reveal which you were. I wish you loved your country half as much as you love yourself. Also, time to stop obsessing about those women from Michigan. You’re not our type.”
She later added to her statement.
“Can’t a random state AG from the Midwest sleep in on a Sunday morning without waking up to find that the President of the United States has mean-tweeted about you overnight (again)? The answer is “yes” come January 20th,” she said.
