Whatcom Transportation Authority (WTA) is asking residents of Lynden to respond to a brief survey, to help design its new “on-demand” van service. The survey can be found at https://wtasurvey.infocommunity.org/
Starting in March, Lynden residents will be able to use a mobile app to hail a ride to any destination within the City of Lynden, in a WTA-operated van. The service is wheelchair accessible and open to everyone. Those who would prefer to hail a ride by phone or online will have that option as well.
This new service is a grant-funded pilot project, to test whether on-demand vans can improve access to public transportation in a small city. Like many agencies that serve both urban areas and small cities, WTA finds the standard offerings of fixed route and paratransit service—which meet people’s needs extremely well in densely populated areas—to be less effective for residents of small cities.
Eighty percent of funding for this pilot project will come from the Federal Transit Administration’s Integrated Mobility Innovations (IMI) Program. This was one of twenty-five projects in twenty-three states to receive IMI funding. The purpose of the IMI program is to support innovative technologies that improve access to public transportation, increase efficiency, and enhance the overall rider experience.
What’s in a name?
In addition to providing input, Lynden residents who take the survey can submit suggestions on what the new service should be called.
