The Pokémon series has an array of different types, but when it comes to Ice-types specifically, they are hard to come by. There are currently a total of 51, which is the lowest amount of any. However, that does not mean that there are not many good Ice-types, as it has Articuno, Mamoswine, and Glastrier, to name a few. Thus, it is a type that warrants more attention and even creations from the series. There is a lot more to explore with it and it will be fun to see where the franchise goes.
However, even with all of this being the case, it is clear that there are Ice-types that just do not fit all that well. In fact, it would be fair to state that they resemble more with different types, as they specific aspects that help their cases in this regard. That does not translate to them being bad Pokémon though, as some of them are actually spectacular in battle. Yet, them being Ice-types is certainly not the best classification for them.
10 Snorunt
Snorunt is a very interesting Pokémon. Technically, it does make sense for it to be an Ice-type, as it is referred to as the "Snow Hat Pokémon." However, nothing about its actual appearance really gives off that vibe.
Not many casual followers of the series would assume this, as it does not resemble, say, a beanie. Its evolved form, Glalie, makes more sense of being an Ice-type, though, as it actually has ice all over its face.
9 Dewgong
Dewgong is a Generation I Pokémon that certainly warrants the label of underrated. It actually can handle itself quite well in battle, but it often is overshadowed by the immense amount of talent in the Kanto region.
However, the one strange element of this Pokémon is that it actually is an Ice-type, too. This does not make the most sense, as its pre-evolved form, Seel, does not hold this same distinction and is only a Water-type.
8 Sneasel
It is easy to tell that Sneasel is a Dark-type, as it is black in color and is known for being around at nighttime. However, an intriguing factoid about it is that it also is an Ice-type, too.
This is where this Pokémon is a bit perplexing, as nothing about it really screams it having Ice-like abilities. In fact, it would be easier to believe that it is a Fire-type, as it has a good chunk of red on its body, too.
7 Jynx
Jynx is commonly disliked throughout the Pokémon community, which is quite the rarity from Generation I. However, putting that aside, a weird aspect of this Pokémon is that it is actually an Ice-type.
Nothing about Jynx necessarily gives off this vibe. It would have been more intriguing for the series to make it an Electric-type, as she does have yellowish features. Either way, it is just hard accepting that she is meant to be an Ice-type.
6 Alolan Vulpix
The beauty of Alolan versions of original Pokémon is that they come with different skillsets. Alolan Vulpix does this, as instead of being a Fire-type, this cute little creature is actually an Ice-type.
While this Pokémon makes sense as an Ice-type considering it is supposed to be an arctic fox, the main concern with it being an Ice-type is that it would have been more fitting as a Water-type. This is due to the fact that it would have created a larger contrast, as Fire-types are the complete opposites of Water-types.
5 Swinub
Swinub is a Pokémon that is always important to catch, as it of course evolves into Mamoswine, which is very powerful. What is interesting though is that Swinub is actually an Ice-type.
It is a peculiar fact, as Swinub appears to just be an extra furry pig. Although it is a bit easier to understand with its evolved forms, Swinub looks like a Pokémon that should have been simply a Normal-type.
4 Cloyster
When looking at Cloyster, it is hard to determine why exactly it is an Ice-type. Its original form, Shelder, is only a Water-type, yet Cloyster for some reason gets to have this extra ability.
It would be warranted if Cloyster looked like something people would find in arctic temperatures, but it does not. Thus, it is hard not to question why exactly it possesses this specific distinction. With its purple color, maybe it could have been a Poison-type as its extra set of powers.
3 Smoochum
Although Smoochum is the pre-evolved form of Jynx, it looks like it comes from an entirely different line of Pokémon. Therefore, it is has a different reason as to why it does not fit in with the Ice-type classification.
Smoochum looks like many of the Fairy-type Pokémon of the series, as it is cute and pink. Although it does hold a bit of originality with its blonde hair, it still does possess similarities to Fairy-types far more than Ice-types.
2 Lapras
Although Gyarados is the giant ocean monster that fans seem to remember most from Generation I, Lapras is still elite, too. This is an immensely powerful Pokémon that can win battles with ease.
However, that does not excuse the fact that it should not be an Ice-type. It spends most of its time in warmer temperatures and does not have the appearance of an Ice-type. Also, in the anime, it is able to develop psychic abilities, so perhaps that could have been its secondary type.
1 Spheal
Spheal is a Generation III Pokémon that is very similar to Seel. Yet, what makes it a bit different is that it actually is an Ice/Water dual-type instead of just water, which in turn, gives it different powers.
However, in terms of its appearance, it does not necessarily look like a true Ice-type. It certainly is fitting of a Water-type with its blue colors and it being a seal, but its demeanor just not do it justice when it comes to its Ice-type classification.
