The Douglas County Board of Commissioners is at odds, and two members are in the process of attempting to oust the chairperson.
Commissioners Abe Laydon and George Teal sent a letter Friday to Commissioner Laura Thomas, who is serving as chair of the board, informing her that they intend to “terminate” her role as chairperson.
In the blistering letter Laydon and Teal accuse Thomas of “frequent dissemination of misinformation and untruths.”
Thomas was elected to her first term as a commissioner in November 2016. She was re-elected in November 2020.
“The issues addressed in your public messaging, be they our work to reopen and rebuild the economy through the cost free incentives or support keeping higher education in Douglas County, remain of high importance to Douglas County residents,” the letter said. “The distrust you helped create must end, as citizens need assurances that those who were elected to protect their interests are doing so.”
The letter is signed: Sincerely, The Board of County Commissioners.
Approval of the resolution to unseat Thomas is pending a Tuesday meeting of the board.
On Saturday, Thomas said on Twitter that she’ll not back down and that she refused to sign a letter of apology, with her name on it, scripted by Laydon.
At a mediation to end this embarrassing conflict with the @douglascountyco commissioners I was presented with this by @AbeLaydon; if I’d sign it, I would not be censured Tuesday and I’d be CONDITIONALLY reinstated to finish my year term as Chair. My response: pic.twitter.com/vtJc0eWoBc

“I don’t work for Abe and George and I don’t back down from bullies,” Thomas wrote longhand. “Not signing this — Sincerely Lora.”
Commissioners are limited to serving two four-year terms.
