Acura Trademarks "Integra Type S" and Our Excitement Hits VTEC, Yo - Motor Trend

gomotar.blogspot.com

We're still not finished processing Acura's decision to bring back the Integra, its once premium compact model that bundled all of Honda's best engineering attributes into a snappy handling, zippy performance commuter. The new Integra will return in 2022, likely as a 2023 model, and while we're still figuring out whether it'll have two doors or four—the originals offered both, and the new one might, too—and what might power it, Acura has gone ahead and essentially answered one question we'd yet to ask: Will there be a hotter Integra Type S?

Based on a trademark filing that just appeared on the United States Patent and Trademark site—it was filed August 20, 2021, so just the other day—Acura is thinking about a new Integra Type S model. That's because, well, the company applied for the trademark "Integra Type S." Such a filing indicates the company is starting to gobble up the rights to the name, which one suspects would adorn any higher-performance Integra model joining Acura's budding Type S lineup, which currently includes the TLX sedan, MDX SUV, and, soon, the dying NSX supercar.

Now, we have one glaring asterisk to report: The trademark filing is for "apparel and headwear, namely, caps, hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts, knit shirts, polo shirts, jackets, and vests." Hmm ... nowhere in there do we see the words "automobile," "car," or "vehicle." Perhaps Acura will get around to adding those intended uses to this trademark or file a new one (or perhaps it doesn't need to, as it already has the rights to the Integra and Type S vehicle-related labels separately).

There is a similar trademark for "Type S" and "TLX Type S" that applies to the same apparel-related uses, save for a weird disclaimer "excluding boots" on the latter. Guess Texans can't look forward to any TLX Type S boots, but maybe they'll get some Integra Type S clompers. And before you ask, yes, there is a vehicle-specific trademark for "TLX Type S," so we bet a car-related one is coming soon for the "Integra Type S" moniker. As for what form this new Integra might take, well, your guess is as good as ours at this point. The new Integra's historical connection to the last high-performance model in its lineage, the Integra Type R sold between 1997 and 2001 is another mystery, but we're looking forward to finding out more.
