The Delta variant is now the predominant strain of COVID, according to the CDC, and it accounts for more than 90% of all new cases in the United States.
The Delta variant, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is “more infectious” and more easily transmissible, even in people who have been vaccinated.
The CDC recommends that people wear face masks indoors in areas where there is high or substantial COVID-19 transmission.
Which face masks provide the best protection against the Delta variant?
For people who are not vaccinated and who have other risk factors, the N95 mask will provide the most effective protection because they fit tight to the face and allow little air - and thus airborne particles - to seep in around the edges.
The N95 also would be beneficial for people who are in areas where the Delta variant is spreading. Those who are vaccinated could use a multi-layered cloth mask but can also choose the higher level of protection.
The N95 masks are regulated in the U.S. by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a division of the CDC. The KN95 masks are regulated by the Chinese government.
N95 masks fit tighter around the face so as to not allow air in around the edges. The KN95 masks have a looser fit. N95 masks, according to the CDC, “filters at least 95% of airborne particles but is not resistant to oil-based particles.” You can find more information about N95 masks from the CDC here.
Here are some places where you can buy N95 and KN95 masks:
This website distributes the RespoKare NIOSH-approved N95 respirator masks.
“Each of these bacteria-fighting masks have four secure layers capable of blocking 95% of small (.3 micron) particles, but inactivates up to 99.9% within minutes. This way, transmission of one (or more than one) human pathogen(s) by antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antiviral activity is markedly decreased keeping you vitally protected.”
