Those seeking to prevent type 2 diabetes could benefit from adding brown seaweed to their diets, according to a new analysis performed by South Korean researchers.
Scientists with the Department of Food Science and Biotechnology, at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, compiled 23 studies which appear to indicate that brown seaweed helps regulate the presence of glucose in the bloodstream.
By eating the algae — which is common in certain Asian cuisines — people who don’t have type 2 diabetes can preempt it from developing, while those diagnosed with the condition can use it to aid in their treatment.
“Seaweeds contain various functional components, such as polyphenols and fucoidan, which have been reported to exert multiple benefits, including blood glucose regulation, improved intestinal health, and enhanced lipid profiles,” the abstract to the analysis, published in the journal Nutrients, said.
The study further indicated that a “high dose” of seaweed — which was defined as 1000 milligrams or more — was more beneficial than a smaller dose, in regulating glucose levels.
Seaweed is sometimes served as a side dish or a cooking additive in parts of Asia. It is also sometimes consumed as a dietary supplement “that contains extracts or powders aimed at maintaining and improving health,” the study said.
As seaweed consumption has become increasingly popular in Western countries, the Canadian government has also approved seaweed supplements for maintaining healthy glucose levels and mitigating the glycemic index of other foods, according to the South Korean study.
