At Monday’s December meeting, the Cherokee School Board is expected to name a replacement for former Board member Chuck Wulfsen, who resigned his post in November and is leaving town.

Through Thursday, the District had received letters from three District residents applying for the post to fill out Wulfsen’s term the expires November 2022.

According to the state, the Board can publish a public notice to appoint a District member to fill out the unfinished term, unless citizens file a petition to requires a special election, which has not occurred, according to District information.

Specifically, state legislation requires school boards to publish notice of their intent to fill the vacancy by appointment and provides a process by which citizens can petition to require a special election under certain circumstances.

A vacancy occurs when a board member dies, resigns or leaves office, fails to reside in the school district or meets other parameters established in law. Once a vacancy occurs, the board may fill the vacancy by board appointment within 30 days of the vacancy.
