HADLEY – A mandatory mask wearing order along Route 9 from Amherst to Northampton – including the business and commercial corridor – that Board of Health last week said would go into effect Aug. 3 is currently on hold because the idea had not been vetted with the municipality’s Unified Command working group ahead of time.

This ad-hoc group consists of local public health officials and includes town administrator, police and fire chiefs and the Select Board Chairman, David Fill II.

Hadley Town Administrator David Nixon confirmed Friday that the UC is scheduled to meet on Aug. 10 to discuss the BOH mandatory mask wearing order.

“The mask order is up for discussion at Monday’s Unified Command” meeting, Nixon said in an email statement to The Republican.

The order says, “The Board’s Health Agent and other agents designated by the Board shall have the authority to enforce this Order as necessary. The designated enforcing authority may call on the support of the Hadley Police Department if necessary.”

“A person who violates any provision of this Order shall be subject to a penalty in the amount of fifty dollars ($50) for a first offense; one hundred dollars ($100) for a second offense; and two hundred dollars ($200) for a third or subsequent offense,” it says.

One reason the order was put on hold, and will be discussed Monday, is the police department was not told about it prior to being issued on July 31 by board of health.
