All but one Owensboro Public School Board of Education members voted to continue with the KHSAA’s Board of Control decision on fall sports Thursday at the board office.

Superintendent Dr. Matthew Constant said there were four options to be considered.

  • Recommend to allow sports as KHSAA and KMEA have presented
  • Disallow sports
  • Recommend to follow KHSAA’s Board of Control if they update their decision after Friday’s Kentucky Department of Education meeting
  • Table the issue with a possibility of a special called meeting pending today’s outcome.

After the meeting, Board Vice-Chair Melissa Decker said Board Member Michael Johnson, the lone nay vote (4-1), gave her another avenue to think about.

“Mr. Johnson spoke tonight and he raised issues I hadn’t thought of,” she said. “Such as children commuting to practice. What if they’re all in a car together? It comes down to me to choice. The parents and the children have to make decisions and stick with them. If the parents think it’s okay for their kids to ride together then that’s okay but mostly it just boils doing to school is mandatory and sports and the arts are not. I think we need to put that decision in the hands of the families. I trust our coaches and if they trust their coaches and all the art directors, then they should have the option to return.”

Decker said she stands by her vote of continuing with the current schedule.

“It’s very important to me,” she said. “I ran for school board and am running again because I believe in our kids. I want them to have every chance they can have for success now and for successful futures.”

Owensboro High School Athletic Director Todd Harper spoke during the meeting about the Third Region meeting he and the other athletic directors had Thursday.

He said they’re going along with the KHSAA’s recommendation of 20% capacity for attendance.

For Rash Stadium, it’s about 600 people.

Dr. Jeremy Luckett was also firm in his yes vote and said he cares about the kids and not necessarily about the fans in the stands.

“I think it’s important to get back to as much normal as we can,” he said. “There’s not any scenario that we pick for anything that’s without risk of some kind.”

Dan Griffith asked if the board could reconsider in-person instruction if fall sports go smoothly for the next few weeks.

“If things are going well, let’s get them in class,” he said.

Board Chair Jeremy Edge said he wanted to show that the board supports the decision handed down by the KHSAA Board of Control and added it could only help the cause for fall sports.
