AMHERST – A Town Council subcommittee is not recommending that Planning Board member Michael Birtwistle continue serving on that board.

The Community Resources Committee on Wednesday voted to recommend three new members, by a 3-1 vote with one CRC member absent.

The CRC’s recommendation are to appoint Johanna Neumann, Thom Long, and Andrew MacDougall.

Voting in favor of this slate was Council Vice President Mandi Jo Hanneke, along with Councilors Evan Ross, and Steve Schreiber.

Councilor Sarah Swartz was opposed; Councilor Shalini Bahl-Milne was absent.

The planning board terms would be effective immediately and to expire June 30, 2023, if approved by the full 13-person council.

Amherst Town Council is scheduled to act on the CRC recommendations at Monday’s meeting.

Birtwistle was among the candidates interviewed by the Council’s Community Resource Committee Aug. 26, for three openings on the planning board; six applied.

Birtwistle’s term was to expire June 30.

At the time, he applied to be reappointed.

The CRC determined, at the time, that they did not have an adequate pool of candidates, and did not interview him at the time.

Amherst Town Council temporarily extended Birtwistle’s term in office to Aug. 31 –- as well as the planning board terms of Christine Gray-Mullen and David Levenstein, whose terms also had ended June 30.

Gray-Mullen and Levenstein did not seek reappointed and have departed from the board.

Contacted on Thursday, Birtwistle shared his thoughts about the matter, saying he would like to continue serving on the board.

“If the Council wanted to appoint me, I would be happy to serve a 3-year term,” he said, adding: “that seems pretty unlikely at this point.”

“There doesn’t seem to be any mechanism for that – that is kind of a closed door at this point,” he said.

The other applicants that were not recommended by the CRC were Robert Greeney and Adrian Fabos.

The statements of interest by the six applicants are posted on the municipal website, at: https://www.amherstma.gov/DocumentCenter/Index/3966
