We may not be able to jet off to Japan or ride the Orient Express right now, but we can get our kicks vicariously via travel-inspired board games. There are loads of them out there, from the architectural Santorini to Tokaido, which sends players across one of Japan’s most spectacular roads to meet people, taste the cuisine, visit temples and take in the views. The winner of the game is the one who gathers the most varied experiences.

Naturally, travel magazine editors have their favorites. CNN Traveler’s list, for example, of the best travel-inspired games includes the railroad-themed Ticket to Ride Europe and the medieval French kingdom of Carcassonne — and Road Trip, a coast-to-coast word game that arrives in an Airstream-style box.

Afar magazine favors Santorini, a board game inspired by the Greek island’s iconic blue-domed, whitewashed buildings. Players race to build their own structures, Zeus willing, on a 3-D board. Ticket to Ride also makes Afar’s list, as does the Grand Austria Hotel, a board game for budding hoteliers whose goal is to expand a small turn-of-the-last-century Viennese inn into a luxurious lodging, suitable for artists, politicians and imperial princes.

And Travel + Leisure goes for Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and 7 Wonders, in which players rule the seven great cities of the world.
