An overweight teenager who was at risk of developing type 2 diabetes has reduced the risk of the condition by dropping two dress sizes just by ditching fast food and exercising.
Lucy, 18 who lives with her mum Rachel in Surrey used to weigh 15 stone before taking part in a reality TV show called It’s Your Fault I’m Fat on the channel 5STAR.
Between them, they used to gorge on more than 10,000 calories a day, snacking on cakes, biscuits and junk food.
The pair say their comfort eating started when Lucy’s dad left them six-and-a-half years ago.
As part of the TV show, the mother and daughter team agreed to radically overhaul their lifestyle and took part in a specially tailored diet put together by a dietitian.
That included limiting Lucy’s daily calories to 1,500 and introducing her to a gym with a personal trainer twice a week.
After just six weeks, Lucy says she has dropped from a size 18 in jeans to a 14, has lost five pounds in weight and 13cm from her waist. Her mum lost 12 pounds in total.
The pair started their lifestyle overhaul journey discovering their body mass index (BMI) was dangerously high, meaning they were at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes, blood pressure or even experiencing a heart attack.
Lucy said: “Most of my food intake comes from snacking and I literally eat cake all the time. I’ll roll over in bed and find a snack wrapper stuck to me.
“I just feel ginormous and absolutely huge. It makes me feel that everyone thinks that I’m gross and I feel like I’m gross.”
Over the course of the programme, Lucy looks back at the last few years, admitting that she has changed “quite dramatically” in recent times.
Five weeks after the show was filmed, the TV crew returned to meet with Lucy and Rachel who were still carrying on with their new healthy habits.
It’s Your Fault I’m Fat is on 5STAR at 10pm on Tuesdays. See more information about the Low Carb Program.
