The Birmingham Board of Education on Monday night named Mark Sullivan as its next school superintendent.
Sullivan, a longtime education leader, had served as interim superintendent since April when Lisa Herring announced she was leaving to become superintendent of Atlanta Schools.
Cheri Gardner, the school board representative for District 6, said it is in the best interest of the school district’s students to appoint Sullivan. She said Sullivan has provided solid leadership as interim superintendent during challenging times.
Sullivan, 54, started his career as a classroom teacher in BCS. He has been a school principal and has held several administrative positions, including Chief of Staff for the former superintendent.
Board President Daagye Hendricks thanked Sullivan for all he had done during the pandemic. “We appreciate your tenure and caring and willingness to serve.”
Sullivan said he was “honored” and “humbled” at the opportunity. “As many of you know I started as student, then a teacher, principal and central office administrator. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with, and for, some outstanding people and see what excellence looks like in education. This is a responsibility I don’t take lightly. I will work hard to ensure our school system remains and is able to rise to the challenges we face.”
Board member Mark Boehm had urged against voting to name Sullivan as the permanent replacement. “I feel strongly it’s premature to make that decision right now. No disrespect to Dr. Sullivan, but the [search] process is important for us to sustain and work through as a board.”
Board member Sandra Brown said the board’s nominating committee had received seven qualifying applicants (16 had applied overall).
Sullivan is the 11th person to lead the system in about the past 21 years.
