The Wenatchee School Board unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night that gives the district the authority to enact its plan to reopen for the 2020-21 school year.
While the district’s actual plan to reopen is still in it’s draft form, the resolution was the final necessary green light to move forward. Prior to approving the resolution, Wenatchee was required by the state to submit a plan to the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction that included answers to about 30 questions regarding reopening.
Superintendent Dr. Paul Gordon said the plan addresses the mandatory health requirements, statutory education requirements, and additional expectations identified by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
“This is authorizing us to reopen. The board has seen the plan. The board has been made aware of the plan, and the board believes that the plan, in it’s current format, is a plan that they support, and they are putting their stamp of approval on our plan to move forward,” explained Gordon.
The district had previously announced that it would begin the year entirely online.
The resolution states that the plan be posted on the District’s website two weeks prior to the reopening of school, although revisions are expected throughout the year. Wenatchee School District’s first day of school is August 26th.
Board President Laura Jaecks said she empathizes with the families who may find themselves flat-footed and wondering how they are going to make this work.
“Like I told somebody the other day, I don’t think you’ll find a person in the district who says, ‘We are super happy about this. We think this is a great plan and we would do this no matter what.’ I don’t think anyone of us would say that,” continued Jaecks.
The school board also approved an amended district calendar during the meeting Tuesday evening.
