PHILADELPHIA — Paul Reed is back with the Philadelphia 76ers after the front office matched the three-year, $23 million offer sheet he signed with the Utah Jazz. Reed was a restricted free agent, so the Sixers had that option.
Reed averaged 4.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in the 2022-23 season and he took over the backup big man spot behind Joel Embiid midway through the season. He filled in for an injured Embiid twice in the playoffs and delivered a double-double in both games.
Now that Reed has returned, it’s time to get to work. New coach Nick Nurse has a plan for the young big man and speaking at the Jr. 76ers Summer Hoops Tour, Reed gave some insight on that plan including molding him in the same form as a Toronto Raptors All-Star.
Reed on his conversations with Nurse
“I’ve talked to him plenty of times and it’s always been kind of the same kind of idea. He talked about molding me into a Pascal Siakam-type player. Somebody who can kind of do it all. Shoot the ball, drive, pass, but right now, it’s all about focusing on my shot mechanics. That’s the start. That’s where it starts at.”
Reed on working with the coaching staff on his jumper
“Whenever I’m in Philly, the whole coaching staff, we’re all on the same page about what I need to do to get better. So every day I come in the gym, we’re all focusing on the small details in my shot.”
Reed on the confidence he has in his jumper
“I’m feeling more confident. More confident every day. Just about changing my shot mechanics a little bit. That’s all they’ve been focusing on and I’m getting more and more comfortable every day.”
Reed on if he thought the Sixers were going to match the offer sheet
“I didn’t know what was gonna happen to be honest. I was a restricted free agent, so they had an opportunity to match. Then I seen they signed Trez (Montrezl Harrell) and (Mo) Bamba, my agent was like, it’s probably not likely that they match, but when they matched, I was real surprised.”
Reed on if he feels like he can break out
“I’m super excited. I feel like this is gonna be a breakout year for me. I feel like last year, I started figuring things out toward the end, and coming into this season, I already have things figured out so I feel like it’s gonna go a lot smoother.”
