BAY CITY, MI — Several small dogs rescued from two Saginaw-area homes as part of an animal abuse investigation are up for adoption in Bay County.
The 10 Chihuahuas and Chihuahua-mixes at Bay County Animal Services & Adoption Center were among 44 dogs removed by authorities earlier this month when they executed two search warrants on houses in Saginaw County. Numerous animal rescue agencies aided Saginaw County Animal Care and Control in housing the rescued dogs.
Animal Care and Control detailed the dogs seeking new homes:
· Francesca - female, estimated 3 years old. A social butterfly and enjoys the company of other dogs. Because of her petite stature, we would recommend a home with older (8-plus) or no kids. Still recovering from hair loss from flea dermatitis and may have to be monitored for future allergy issues.
· Estelle - female, estimated between 1 and 2 years old. Very busy, will need an active adopter. Can also be vocal, so not appropriate for an apartment-type placement.
· Magdalene - 13 years old. A quiet, more dignified lady. In good health for her age and doesn't mind other dogs as long as they are not too excitable or playful.
· Thiago - male, estimated at around 2 years old. A happy dude, plays nicely with other dogs. Would likely be fine with older, respectful kids.
· Marcus - male, estimated at 8 months to a year old. Chihuahua-dachshund mix. Sweet and lovey to people, but has shown to be a bit protective and wants to resource-guard his people around other dogs. He plays nicely in groups, but will need an adopter who can manage that behavior, or where he can be an only dog. Because of this, we would recommend a home without young kids.
· Oliver - male, estimated at 4-5 months old. Chihuahua-dachshund. The life of the party, this boy is ALL puppy. He will need a family committed to puppy training. Loves other dogs, and we would prefer to see him go to an active family with a canine companion for him.
· Marcella - female, estimated between 1 and 2 years old. Chihuahua-dachshund. This girl is still quite timid, and will need an adopter with a patient hand. We would recommend a home without children, and she may be most comfortable with a calm, confident canine already in the home. She will require a home with a physical fence.
· Beatriz - female, estimated at around 3 years old. The most fearful of the bunch, Bea will need a quiet, adult-only home that is willing to give her the time and love she needs to flourish. She *will not* love you right away, but we know there’s a diamond in the rough just waiting to shine. She will need a home with a physical fence.
· Allegra - female, estimated at 8 months to a year old. Super social, loves other dogs, and would likely fit well into many households. She would prefer an active adopter and a canine companion to help keep her busy. Because she is so petite, we would recommend older (8-plus) kids.
· Rosalie - female, estimated at 4-5 months old. A sweet, lovey girl who will shower you with kisses. She will need an active adopter committed to puppy training, and she would be happiest with a doggy playmate. Because she is so petite, we would recommend older (8-plus) kids.
An 11th dog, Portia, is being adopted by a staff member.
Online adoption applications are available here: https://www.baycounty-mi.gov/Anim…/Adoption-Application.aspx. The completed form can then be emailed to shelteradoptions@baycounty.net.
Paper applications can be filled out by visiting the shelter at 800 Livingston St. in Bay City during business hours, which are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Adoption applications will not be approved on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“Our goal, and responsibility to these dogs, is to pair them up with the best possible matches for their needs and personalities,” Bay County Animal Services & Adoption Center stated on its Facebook page. “It will still be two to three weeks before all of them are done and healed from surgery, so we will be taking our time processing applications. If you don’t hear from us right away, don’t panic! We fully expect a large call volume and lots of emails, and our staff can only work so fast, so please try to be patient and understanding.”
The center is asking applicants be as thorough as possible on their form, including veterinary references if you already have pets in your home and landlord information if you’re a renter.
Saginaw County Animal Care and Control Director Bonnie Kanicki previously told MLive that her staff began investigating after receiving information that there were eight to 10 dogs living in an uninhabited home. Animal control officers ended up getting a search warrant for the Saginaw home and executed it on Aug. 6.
Those officers and some Michigan State Police troopers donned hazardous material suits to enter the home, where they found 18 living dogs, one dead dog, and one dead cat, Kanicki said. The personnel were later decontaminated.
Officers developed additional information leading them to a Buena Vista Township home.
“We got a second warrant immediately and went and executed that and seized 26 live dogs,” Kanicki said.
Between the two houses, 44 dogs were seized. The dogs were all small breeds, mostly Chihuahuas and Chihuahua-mixes, with one cocker spaniel, Kanicki said.
“They were malnourished, dehydrated, and full of fleas,” Kanicki said. “Four or six had to go for urgent medical care.”
The same family owns both houses. At least one resident was present at the second house when officers executed the warrant, Kanicki said.
“They said they had gotten in a little bit over their head,” she said. “They did not indicate they were interested in selling the dogs. They didn’t give them away. They just kept them and allowed them to procreate. They just allowed the dogs to multiply and coexist.”
