When fans think of the cutest Pokémon around, Flying-types might not immediately spring to mind. With their talons and claws and sharp beaks, many of these Pokémon are not especially cuddly. However, there is so much diversity in the world of Pokémon that the Flying-type has evolved far beyond a typical “bird of prey.”

Of course, adorability is a subjective matter. Some of these Pokémon are here because they’re cuddly, sure, but others are more distinctive and unique than they are huggable. Regardless, here are ten of the cutest Flying-type Pokémon around:

10 Taillow (Normal/Flying)

Taillow is part of a unique subset of flying-types that are basically just birds. Pidove, Fletchling, Toucannon… these Pokémon are cute because they’re based on cute birds.

Taillow is a bit more unique in its design than these other examples. It has a very distinctive tail and coloring, but it’s basically just a swallow and swallows are cute. All of these Pokémon are similarly cute for their real-life associations.

9 Rowlet (Grass/Flying)

Rowlet is a creature that looks like it was designed in a lab to look as adorable as possible. It has the physicality of an emperor penguin, the same squatness and rounded features, but condensed and concentrated for maximum preciousness.

It even has two leaves growing out of its chest that form a makeshift bowtie, which is just delightful. But it might just be so designed to be cute that it loses some of its organic appeal.

8 Cramorant (Water/Flying)

Cramorant looks a little confused, but mostly it just looks endearing. Cramorant love to eat, and their favorite snack is a Water-type called Arrokuda, but occasionally they’ll accidentally try to much down on a Pikachu as well (in what is known as their “Gorging Form”), but, thankfully, not seriously! It’ll spit that Pikachu right out once it realizes its mistake.

This slightly befuddled bird admits its mistakes, but it's hard to stay mad when it's so cute.

7 Emolga (Electric/Flying)

What if you took Pikachu, potentially the most adorable fictional creature ever created, and mixed it with a squirrel, one of Earth’s cutest creatures? Seems like a slam dunk, right? And it is. Emolga is about as cute as one would imagine it to be.

It’s basically just a flying squirrel, with its weird arm flaps and fluffy tail, but that’s fine. A flying squirrel is essentially a Pokémon already, as it’s a wondrous and baffling creature that has no logical reason to exist. Throw a little of that patented Pikachu cuteness in there and the result is glorious.

6 Honchkrow (Dark/Flying)

This is some top-notch character design. The fact that they took the time to give this bird plumage that resembles a fedora, rather than just putting a hat on its head and calling it a day, is brilliant. Adding a crest that approximates a long white beard only puts it over the top.

Honchkrow is cute in a less obvious way than Rowlet. This is a bird with dignity. It looks like it would be loyal, like it could keep a secret. This is the kind of bird a Pokémon trainer will want by their side.

5 Delibird (Ice/Flying)

Delibird has a look at just screams Christmastime, from its coloring to its physique. The red coat, the white beard, the jolly chubbiness… even the fact that it's an Ice-type fits the bill. It even carries around presents in its tail, though in this case, it’s food for people who have gotten desperately lost in the mountains.

This Pokémon is essentially Santa Claus, and much like Santa Claus, it brings joy and childlike wonder wherever it goes.

4 Combee (Bug/Flying)

Bees can be scary, but they're also gentle creatures, which Combee exemplifies. Of course, replacing their faces with emojis doesn't hurt either.

Combee is so cheerful that fans can’t help but smile when they look at it as it buzzes pleasantly around. But then when it evolves into Vespiquen… that's another story altogether.

3 Dragonite (Dragon/Flying)

Dragons are notoriously fearsome creatures. As such, when it comes to their character design, cuteness is typically not a concern. There have been exceptions over the years, but long before Toothless, before even Dragon Tails, there was Dragonite.

Dragonite can be a fierce combatant, but in terms of general huggability, it’s about on par with Barney the Purple Dinosaur. Dragonite is the only Pokémon from the original 150 on this list, and to have it still rank so highly after all of these years speaks to its enduring, eternal, universal level of cuteness.

2 Dartrix (Glass/Flying)

Dartrix has that little leaf bowtie, just like Rowlet, but then it ups the stakes with its swooping leaf hair and tuxedo-esque tail feathers. Aside from being adorable, this might just be the classiest Pokemon out there.

While it can sometimes be a bit vain with its adorableness, trainers can't help but forgive it.

1 Woobat (Psychic/Flying)

It is impossible to resist the charms of the Woobat. This creature is literally a puffball with a nose shaped like a heart and a single baby tooth. It could not possibly be more precious. It even evolves (into the likewise adorable Swoobat) based not on combat experience but how much it likes its trainer.

Friendship makes it grow stronger, just adding to its cuteness. Woobat is a study in contrasts. Its adorable face is juxtaposed by its realistic bat wings, with the sharpness of its single tooth suggesting a potential hunger for blood. The whole thing comes together perfectly, cementing its status as the cutest Flying-type Pokémon to date.
