Board President Maria Valado, Vice President Christopher Munoz, and community activist Dave “Doc” Watson filed for the November Bayonne Board of Education election.
Incumbent President Valado and Vice President Munoz have united with retired music teacher and professional musician “Doc” Watson as members of the “Together We Can” ticket.
A lifelong Bayonne resident, Watson was a popular Band Director at Bayonne High School from 1984 to 1994. He served as the Bayonne High School Band Director and was commonly known to his students as “Doc.”
Watson continues to inspire young people through his music programs, having enjoyed a long professional career, including performing with Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, India Arie, The O’Jays, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Police, and The Sugar Hill Gang, to name a few.
“I am running because I believe we need a Board that will act with integrity and serve as an example to our young people,” Watson said. “We should have a Board representative of our community. As someone with no conflicts, I can do what I believe is right for Bayonne not my friends and family.”
Continuing progress in Bayonne schools
While Watson is a newcomer, Valado and Munoz are running for re-election.
“In the past few years we have seen tremendous transition and progress with the Bayonne school system,” said Valado, who was elected to the board in 2017. “I am proud of the substantive changes we have made in curriculum and leadership.”
“Bayonne is making the investment that will once again make our schools the best in Hudson County and the state of New Jersey,” Valado said.
Vice President Munoz was first elected in 2015.
“When I first joined the Board, we had an education system built on nepotism and conflict,” Munoz said. “I initiated plans to bring greater transparency to the Board – including live-streaming our meetings. We had teachers without contracts, and moral was low. Today, we have a multi-year contract and have formed partnerships between all the stakeholders.”
Valado, Watson, and Munoz are all educators who are dedicated to improving the education of students, and treating teachers with the respect, while understanding the impact on property taxes.
“Doc was my band leader, and Maria has been an important partner at the board,” Munoz said. “This is the first time I am running with a team, but I do not think we can afford to slide back to the previous conflict and corrupt system.”
“’Together We Can’ represents our belief in Bayonne,” Watson said. “We know that working together we can continue the change. I am happy to be joining with Maria and Christopher to bring qualified integrity to the board.”
“Progress has been made, but we have a lot more work to do,” Valado said. “Together we can make Bayonne the envy of every school system in the state.”
